Frequently Asked Questions
Natural stone comes from a quarry. A quarry is an open excavation or pit in a mountain from which stone is obtained by digging and cutting. This produces large blocks of stone, which are then sliced into slabs. Slabs are then polished or to bring out the colour in the stone. Slabs coming from the same block will be quite similar in colour and veining (pattern).
Granite, Marble and Quartzite are natural materials. We advise that you select your colour based on the slab rather than a small sample as the colours and patterns vary from block to block.
A honed finish is where we remove the highly polished finish from your marble or granite slab to give it a more satin or matt finish.
Yes. We would however recommend a honed finish for this type of application as a polished surface is more vulnerable to household acids including vinegar & citrus acids that can etch the surface.
Engineered stone or manmade stone is a composite material made of crushed stone bound together by an adhesive most commonly polymer resin. Engineered stone is non-porous and never requires sealing. It is highly resistant to scratching, chipping, acids and oils. It also has a strong resistance to staining.
Engineered Stone requires very little maintenance to keep the surface looking like new. For every day cleaning we recommend wiping the surface with warm soapy water (a mild detergent) and a damp cloth. There are several products that can be purchased to clean your engineered stone. Caesarstone, Quantum Quartz and Smartstone have cleaning products that can be purchased directly from them otherwise DuPont Daily Stone & Tile Cleaner can be purchased from our St Mary’s Office .We advise that products such as car wash, wax, Mr. Sheen or Spray and Wipe should not be used as they may damage your stone.
No, engineered stone do not require sealing and are virtually non-porous.
